Alberta Hospital Greenhouse

Edmonton, AB

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Size: 953 m2 (10,250 ft2)

Cost: $5.3M

Location: Edmonton, AB

The new greenhouse is an ancillary facility located at the Alberta Hospital which was built to replace the original greenhouse destroyed by fire in 2016.

The new building was designed to be more functional and efficient than its predecessor, with less exterior walls and an open floor plan that provides better connectivity between spaces and users.

Approximately two-thirds of the floor area is dedicated to the greenhouse, including a secondary tropical greenhouse within. The remaining contains support spaces and a sales area open to the public to purchase plants grown by patients of Alberta Hospital.

The care and tending of plant life provides an opportunity for Horticultural Therapy; helping patients within the hospital that struggle with depression, addiction, abuse, or memory disorders.
