The Elk Island Catholic School Board building includes a two story office building and a seven bay shop which houses the district’s bus fleet and provides a facility for bus and school maintenance.
The School Board required an open concept floor plan for the office component to foster communication among employees but also wanted a portion of the space dedicated to breakout spaces for quiet, distraction free work. The design reflects these conflicting needs by providing multiple social hubs throughout the building and multiple breakout rooms with acoustic treatments to offset the need for closed offices.
The light-filled lunchroom on the main floor has become the heart of the building; this non-traditional space is the combination of an eating area, collaboration space, social hub, and a means to increase employee interaction. The building also incorporates a timeless material palette; the brickwork on the interior is a subtle reminder of schoolhouses from years past.
