The Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Research Innovation is a part of the University of Alberta’s Health Research Innovation Facility (HRIF), a world-class research and teaching facility that accommodates a variety of research activities in state-of-the-art lab spaces. With flexible modular laboratories, the facility maximizes efficient use of space and supports adaptation to future needs, sharing common spaces and maximizing natural light in lab and work areas. Its occupants include the Alberta Diabetes Institute, Exercise Physiology, Genomics & Transplantation, Regenerative Medicine and a BSL3 containment facility. The seventh level of the building accommodates an interstitial space constructed specifically to support cGMP facilities with six Clean Rooms (CL).

The Li Ka Shing Centre connects directly to the Heritage Medical Research Centre, which in turn connects to the Katz Group Centre for Pharmacy and Health Research (the Health Research and Innovation Facility - West) and the Medical Sciences Building forming a complex of interrelated, highly specialized health sciences research facilities.

The consulting services included functional programming, site, and master planning, decant and phasing strategies, encompassing the design to redevelop and link the adjacent facilities into a cohesive health research sector. Throughout the life of this project, the prime consulting team was engaged in various fit outs that covered a wide cross-section of research laboratory types, including Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL2), Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL3), cGMP, and vivarium. Several science disciplines have been accommodated such as: microbiology, histology, neuroscience, ophthalmology, physiology, cell biology, imaging suites, dental research, oncology, pharmaceutical sciences, virology, pediatric, immunology, biomedical engineering, and several other specialties.
